Lower body lift

Reveal the real you beneath your skin

After significant weight loss it is not unusual for the skin to have lost its elasticity and be unable to adapt to your new shape. This can be very disappointing after all the effort that has been put into losing weight, and can also cause problems such as chafing. Because most weight is usually lost from the lower body (buttocks, thighs, lower abdomen) a lower body lift can be a very effective way to remove the loose, hanging skin extending from the abdomen, around the flanks, as well as lifting the buttock, and revealing your true shape.

Considering a lower body lift?

There are some common questions that many people who are considering a lower body lift ask, such as:

Is it for me?

A lower body lift is a complex and very individualised procedure, and the outcome will be different for everyone. That is why before you make any decisions you will have an extensive consultation with Dr Hunt to discuss your needs and goals for the surgery.

During your first consultation, Dr Hunt will evaluate your general health and explain the recommended surgical procedure including the risks and potential complications and your recovery time. Photographs will be taken for your medical record and to allow Dr Hunt to fully plan your surgery.

Dr Hunt's assistant will prepare a quote for you, which will include the surgical, anaesthetic, and hospital fees.

How is it done?

A lower body lift is a complex surgical procedure. It is performed under a general anaesthetic, given by an anaesthetist, in an accredited hospital, so you are assured of the best care.

During the procedure incisions are made around your waist, across your lower abdomen and down your thighs. Excess skin is trimmed, muscle is tightened and if necessary fat is removed. The skin is sutured in place with absorbable sutures. Often a tummy tuck is performed at the same time.

Drains are placed under the incisions and will remain in place for 7 to 10 days. The incisions are closed and covered and a compression garment is applied.

When can I go home?

You will stay in hospital for at least one night following surgery. Once you are comfortable and able to get to and from a bathroom you will go home. When you go home you should limit your movements to around the house for 2 to 3 days.

When you are discharged you will be given a prescription for pain medication, which will minimise your discomfort. You should take only the pain medication prescribed, and eat before you take it or it might upset your stomach.

Eat lightly for 3 to 4 days after surgery and then resume you normal diet. Make sure you get plenty of fluids.

Will I have to return for post-operative care?

You will return to see Dr Hunt several times over the few weeks following your surgery.

Dr Hunt will see you weekly for the first month and then will extend time between visits as you progress.

How long will I be off work?

You should plan on taking at least 3 weeks off work.

When can I resume my normal activities?

For the first 10 days after surgery your movements will be quite limited and you will have to walk carefully. As the skin gets used to its new position you will slowly regain your range of movement.

You will be taught how to care for the drain sites and incisions before you leave hospital.

Once the drains are removed you may shower.

Compression garments must be worn continuously for 2 weeks, and then during the day for a further 2 weeks.

It will take at least 3 weeks before you fully recover.

When will I see the end result?

The effects of a lower body lift are immediate, although the full benefits may take up to two months or more to be fully appreciated.

You will have some scarring on your abdomen and thighs. Dr Hunt will explain where your scars will be before surgery. It will take at least a year for the scars to mature and fade from pink/red to pale. Where possible, they will be placed so they are not visible in your swimsuit or underwear.
